Miss Kansas Is Raising Awareness About Domestic Violence

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Sep 21, 2024 | 0 Comments

In New Jersey, domestic violence is, unfortunately, a serious problem. However, the state has taken steps to help prevent relationship abuse and provide support to victims. It takes people like Alexis Smith, who was recently voted Miss Kansas, to use their public platforms to raise concerns. As this issue gains more attention and as more people are willing to speak out, lawmakers have strengthened legal protections.

If you're dealing with a domestic violence situation, you shouldn't feel ashamed or try to hide it. You should seek the legal help you need with a restraining order. The Lento Law Firm's Family Law Team can help you get the protection you need. Calling Out Domestic Abuse at the Miss Kansas Pageant

Shortly after being crowned Miss Kansas in June, Alexis Smith started using her platform to shine a light on domestic violence and abusive relationships. She also mentioned domestic violence during the interview portion of the pageant, saying that her abuser was in the audience that night. The video of her on-stage comments went viral on social media, generating support and national media coverage.

Smith's platform as Miss Kansas will focus on raising concerns about relationship abuse. She said, “My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships.” This issue matters deeply for her because she was in an abusive relationship herself, as were many of the women in her family. Smith's comments have sparked a national response, showing that more people are willing to talk about domestic violence now than they were in the past.

Getting Help for Domestic Violence

Policymakers are becoming more aware of how widespread domestic abuse is and offering victims and potential victims more legal protections as a result. If you're concerned for your safety in your relationship, you shouldn't try to hide it or just deal with it. You should take action to protect yourself. If you have children, the abuse could extend to them as well—and you have to do whatever you can to keep them safe.

In New Jersey, as in most states, you can get a restraining order against another individual if they've committed domestic violence against you or you have reason to fear for your safety. You can usually apply for a restraining order at the county courthouse, and the staff in the Family Division can help you fill it out.

You can also get the Lento Law Firm's Family Law Team to assist you with filing a restraining order. Depending on your situation, you may need protection long-term. Getting this protection can be complicated, requiring you to go to a hearing and make your case. If you work with our team, we can build this case for you and increase the chances of a favorable outcome for you.
